2nd paper rough draft

Cynthia Johnson
English 99
My favorite teacher Kaveh was an excellent teacher, because he took the time to help each student when they needed it no matter how long it took; he also gave us work that challenged our minds but was not impossible to complete, he also cared about his students and liked to have real life conversations with us, and he made the class fun with assignments that helped us in the real world.
Whenever Kaveh gave an assignment he took the time to explain it, in terms that we would understand. He also made sure no one had any questions before we left class. He wanted everyone to succeed. I was having a hard time understanding the written instructions for a research project that we were doing on the Japan earthquakes. So, I asked for help and he took the time to explain it to me until I got it. Then I had trouble finding the right web sites with the most current information about the quakes and he was able to give me some sites to try out that I had not found before. I have not encountered a teacher like that throughout all the time I have been in school.
One of the first assignments that he gave us was to pick three web articles from a list that he provided for us and then write summaries about them. The list had things on it like how to get a home loan, financial security, budgeting, credit and debt. I chose to read the one on financial issues and how to see if you have unclaimed money in your name. The ways that you could have unclaimed money are if you have stocks, bonds, inheritances, and if you never picked up your last pay check from a job. So, I was able to go to the web site and check and I did have an unclaimed check from a job of mine from ten years ago. My mother also had some too from stocks that she never cashed in. That is only one example of how the assignments he assigned helped us in real life.
He also taught us to use Microsoft Office 2007 which I have found very useful since I have been in college. We had him for a teacher for six hours one day a week. In the morning we would spend that time going over the Microsoft Office Program, then in the afternoon we spend that time writing papers and researching information for the papers that we had to write which would be due at the next time we met with him for class.
Some of the research assignments that he gave us were very challenging and I struggle with that kind of thing all the time and he took the time to sit down and explain it to me. He is willing to still help even after you are not in his class any more. I have gone to him and asked for help many time since I have finished his class.
There were many time that we would out go out for our break and smoke cigarettes and he would come out with us and smoke a cigar. We would talk about our children and how life was going. He would tell us about his new daughter that he had; he was a first time father and he was so excited and happy. He loved to talk about her mile stones and what new things she could do. He was also interested in how our kids were doing what was going on in our lives. I have not met many other teachers like that in my life they all seem that they only care about the lessons that they are teaching and that school is their life. They don’t want to know about who we are as people only who we are as students.
On our last day of his class we all thought that we would get out of having to do anymore projects for his class, but he surprised us with doughnuts and then he told us that we had to do one more project on Microsoft Power Point. It was on the year we were born. We had to have at least six slides that talked about the year you were born, the price of gas, the price of a gallon of milk, what was the number one song, who won the World Series, and other things like that from the year that I was born. I thought that it would be boring and no fun but in the end he gave us suggestions of the things we might put in to our presentations and that helped a lot. In the end I had a lot of fun in his class and my presentation turned out great. I was so proud of myself because going in to that class I had never used Microsoft Power Point before and now I am pretty good at it.
I am very glad that I got to have Kaveh as a teacher in the C-SALT program here at Olympic College. I know that any one that also get to have him as a teacher is very lucky. Kaveh is a great teacher who cares about his students as long as they care about themselves, he is also willing to help you if you are willing to help yourself succeed, and he understands that sometimes life just happens. I will take with me the things that I have learned from him for a lifetime. He did just teach us book information but he gave us some of the tools to be able to succeed in future classes.

Dead Poets Society Day 2 Notes

I am glad that we got to watch the movie I think that it is really going to help with writing the paper. There are a lot of good points and the way that Mr. Keating teaches is inspirational. I think that the two movies that we have seen have had a lot of good points and teaching styles. Both the main teachers were great and had very similar teaching styles. They both use humor to get across their points and the things they want the students to learn. They also push the students to their potential because they know that they have it in them to do great.

Dead Poets Society Day 2 Notes
  • What type of teacher Mr. Keating is?
  •  The school name is Welton not Helton…
  • Mr. Keating is having the students say parts of a poem and then kick a ball
  • Neil got the part in the play he is writing a letter to the school and faking it from  his parents
  • The school is a very traditional setting
  • The students seem nervous reading their poetry out loud in front of the class but Mr. Keating encourages them that their work  was not bad
  • Todd did not write a poem
  •  He encourages them even the ones that said they did not write a poem
  •  He is such a great teacher
  • The students like Mr. Keating a lot they open up to him
  •  The kids are in the cave smoking pipes and having another meeting
  • Chris invited Knox to Chet’s party
  • Todd’s parents got him the same desk set 2 years in a row for his birthday
  • Neil throws it off the roof
  • The party is not what Knox thought it would be
  • Knox is drunk at the party
  • Everyone is making out at the party
  • Knox gets caught kissing Chris’s forehead
  • Chet beats him up
  • The club has 2 girls come and they are trying to get girls to join the club and they want to get girls admitted in to the school
  • They slipped an article in to the school newspaper and they are getting in trouble
  • The Head Master gives one chance for the guilty party to come forward or they will get expelled
  • They paddle Mr. Dolton because he was the one who put the article in the paper.
  • He is told he has to turn everyone in and apologize to the school and all will be forgiven
  • Mr. Nolan is questioning how Mr. Keating is teaching his students Mr. Nolan said that they need to follow tradition and get them to college.
  • Mr. Keating says to Mr. Dolton that he needs to watch what he does or he is not going to be able to attend his class anymore.
  • Neil goes in his room and his father is there and his father is talking to him because he forged that letter.
  • His dad is making him quit the play the night before it opens and Neil is the lead role
  • His father is an ass
  • Neil goes to see Mr. Keating
  • Knox goes to Chris’s school to apologize to her for what happened at the party
  • Neil does the play anyway and lies to Mr. Keating about talking to his father
  • Neil’s dad shows up to the play
  • Knox and Chris go to the play together and they hold hands
  • The play is a hit
  • They other play member push Neil foreword because he was the star of the show everyone in the audience claps but Neil’s father
  • Mr. Perry tells Mr. Keating to stay away from Neil
  • Mr. Keating realizes that Neil lied to him and he looks disappointed
  • His dad is making him leave school and go to military school
  • Neil shot and killed himself
  • Todd is very dis-trout about it
  • The school is blaming Mr. Keating for what happened
What a sad movie I can't believe that he killed himself. His father was an ass and should have stopped and listened to his son and maybe he would have lived. Mr. Keating was upset also Then the school blames him for what happened to Neil which is not right. It took a lot of courage for the students to get on their desks and say O Captain My Captain to Mr. Keating in front of the Head Master. They all risked be expelled from the school to stand up for him.

Mr. Escalante was a dedicated teacher

Mr. Escalante was a dedicated teacher, because no matter what happened, he never gave up on himself or the students, he pushed his students to their potential, and he stood up for his students.
Mr. Escalante went to the education testing service to get answers of why the board thought that his students cheated. He walks through the door wearing his average everyday clothing and the two board members are wearing suits and ties. The two men in suits carry themselves as they are federal agents. Mr. Escalante once again does not let the board members intimidate him. When the board was not cooperative, Mr. Escalante kept pushing the board members to show him the answers from his student’s tests. All the board would tell Mr. Escalante is that all of his students got the same answers wrong and that the students could take the test again to prove they did not cheat. The men are still giving very short answers and virtually no explanation. Mr. Escalante then started arguing with the men that if this were to have taken place in Belair and his students were white they wouldn’t even be having this conversation right now. All the men had to say to this is if we don’t single them out people call it discrimination and if we do it is called discrimination as well. By the end of the conversation he told one of the board members that if “I see you on the street I am going to kick your ass.”

Day 3 Stand and Deliver Notes

Stand and Deliver notes Day 3
·        Everyone took the test again and they all passed
·        Every year more and more students passed the AP Calculus test
He was a good teacher because he cared about them and their future. He was hard on them because he knew they had it in them to do well. He showed them that they were worth something and that they had the potential to be great people in the world. He also showed them that it did not matter what race they were they were just as good as everyone one else. He also stood up for them when no one else would. I am glad that we got to watch this movie.

Comparison with yesterdays observations

Stand and Deliver
I think that this is a really good movie, because it shows different kinds of teaching and that a person can get through to “troubled students” even though most think that they can’t so they just don’t try. I also think that if they let the students take the test again they can prove that they did not cheat on the AP calculus test. The teacher has stuck his head out for them and they really tried to do well to prove they had learned something. He is a great teacher. The students learned respect and about authority.  I am glad we have gotten the opportunity to watch this movie.

Comparison between yesterday and today:
  • ·        He calls on a kid that is sleeping in class and the kid gets the right answer and then the teacher tells him to go back to sleep
  • ·        He made a female student mad because he was using her personal life to entertain the class
  • ·        He is now trying to teach them calculus.
  • ·        He is kind of a jerk to the students and does not listen to what they have to say when it comes to certain things
  • ·        He says that they are going to have to study over Christmas break so they can take the AP test
  • ·        He teaches English during night school to people that don’t speak English
  • ·        He has a heart attack
  • ·        The students are all upset when he had the heart attack
  • ·         Poncho and Angel het into a fight and a substitute has no idea what to do with the class because he is a music teacher and not a math teacher
  • ·        He does not  follow instructions  and goes back to work
  • ·        He prepares them for the test by having them stand in a line and answer questions if they get them wrong they have to go to the back of the lien if they get them right they stay where they are and he moves to the next person
  • ·        More students passed than any other school all the students passed the test
  • ·        Angel showed up late for the announcement that they all passed
  • ·        All the students got letters saying that they all cheated because they all got the same answers wrong
  • ·        Angel provoked a cop and got pulled over.
  • ·        They did not cheat I think they should have everyone take the test over again so they can prove that they did not
  • ·        Angel stood up and said “were busted why don’t we just admit it” He was messing with them
  • ·        The teacher goes to see the board and wants to see the test and they won’t let him
  • ·        He goes to bat for them because he believes in his students
  • ·        The board is making them all look bad as well as the teacher
  • ·        The teacher accuses them of being racist because they are accusing only the Spanish kids
  • ·        All the students agree to take the test again. The board gives them only one day to study for the re take of the test.
  • He told them to make sure they did not give them any reason to think that they were cheating.

my response to others comments

Thanks Dr. Sonia I have always struggled with note taking but his time I think I am doing well.

Michelle- Yes I have seen the movie before but it has been a very long time.

Tim- Thanks! I am trying very hard to learn to take better notes. I believe that I learned some helpful hints from my English 98 class last quarter.
