Stand and Deliver notes

Stand and deliver notes:

1.     What type of teaching is seen in the movie?
·        He moves the students that do not speak English to the front and the ones that do speak English to the back.
·        He is suppose to be teaching computer science and ends up teaching math 1a. In a high school setting.
·        Just as he gets the class situated the class is over.
·        He comes to class dressed as a chef and cuts an apple in half then asks the class what they have.
·        Then he cuts a quarter out of another apple and asks how much is there.
·        He shows the late arrival student how to do the 9 times table on his fingers because he does not have any supplies for his class
·        He stops dude from going and getting in to the fight that was already going on to keep him out of trouble.
·        A negative times a negative equals a positive he makes the class say it over and over again.
·        He gives the student 3 books so that he will do the work but not have to be seen carrying the books.
·        The students think that if the whole class does not take the test that the teacher can’t fail the whole class
·        The teachers should expect more from the students than they do
·        The teacher singled out one student to come in front of the class because she was not taking the test. The student is then shown to be studying and her mother told her to stop and turn the light off
·        He keeps trying to help this one student and the student keeps messing it up by leaving the class in the middle of the quiz and then by showing up late to class. The teacher tells him he needs to find another class and then gives in and lets him stay
·        He tries to convince the father of a female student that his daughter needs to stay in school and that she could be the first one in the family to graduate from high school. The student wants to go to medical school. The father throws them out and says that he does not need his money or his business
·        He uses something that the students can relate to teach them the word math problems.
·        The female student returns to the class and shows everyone how to do the problem that the rest of the class cannot figure out.

  1. Holy cow... you are a note taker, but I took a lot of notes as well. It is a nice break from homework, isn't it? I am enjoying the movie, it reminds me a lot of the Literacy Narrative by Mike Rose we read last week. These children are labeled, but this teacher is standing up for them, unlike the other teachers that seem to have them label as bad students. Have you seen this movie before?

  2. Wow, you really have a lot of detail in your notes. You explained each situation just as if I was watching the movie. Excellent job.

  3. Great notes. There is a lot of detail. Don't you wish all teachers were like him.
